San Marco’s Church

Going south towards the centre of the city you head to the religious complex of San Marco. The Church, overlooking the homonym square, was part of the Convent that is now a museum and houses the major collection of works by Beato Angelico in addition to other famous works of artists like Domenico Ghirlandaio, the tabernacle of Lorenzo Ghiberti, Benozzo Gozzoli, Domenico Passignano and Fra’ Bartolomeo.

San Marco is famous as the seat of Girolamo Savonarola ‘s discourses during his short spiritual rule in Florence in the late 15th century, and it was also the favourite meeting point under the reign of Lorenzo il Magnifico of humanists such as Angelo Poliziano and Pico della Mirandola, now buried there.
